The Household Appliance Industry in Mexico

The household appliance industry includes any electrically powered device, utensil or machine used in homes. The industry is divided into two groups: major appliances and small appliances. Major appliances are household appliances that are stationary due to their size and weight. Small appliances are those that are easier to move around.

In 2015, the total household appliance production in Mexico was 7.051 billion dollars and according to estimates it will reach an 3.3% compound annual growth rate in the 2015-2020 period.

Mexico is one of the world's leading suppliers of household appliances. In 2015, exports were 11.955 billion dollars, ranking the country as 5th globally.

The same year, Mexico recorded a 7.251 billion dollar surplus in the household appliance trade, exporting mainly refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines with a capacity of over 10 kg, gas stoves, water heaters, fans, extractor hoods, ovens and vacuum cleaners.

According to data reported by Global Trade Atlas, the leading destination for Mexico's exports of household appliances in 2015 was the United States, with a share of 89% of the total. The rest was exported mainly to Canada and Colombia.

Attraction of Foreign Direct Investment

Figures published by the Secretariat of Economy show that between 2009 and 2015, accumulated foreign investment in the household appliance industry was 483 million dollars.

Companies Established in Mexico

According to INEGI, there are 269 economic units in Mexico related to the industry, employing close to 67,678 people. The states with the largest production are the Mexico City, Estado de México, Nuevo León, Jalisco and Querétaro.

The main household appliance transnationals established in Mexico are: Electrolux (Sweden), General Electric (US), Koblenz (Mexico), LG (South Korea), Mabe (Mexico), Samsung (South Korea) y Whirlpool (US).

Strengths of the Industry in Mexico

•Talent. According to the National Association of Universities and Higher Education Institutions information, annually 115 thousand students of engineering, manufacturing and construction graduated from Mexican institutions.

•Competitive Costs. In a study by KPMG, Mexico stands out as the country in the Americas with the lowest operation costs for household appliance manufacturing.

•Logistics Access. Mexico's closeness to the North American market has significant advantages.

•Supply Capacity. The household appliance industry in Mexico has the capacity to supply some processes and inputs required for manufacturing, such as electric isolators, thermal isolators, cables and harnesses, transformers, and surface treatments, among others.
